Ever eaten one of those small bags of potato chips and feel like you literally only ate 5 chips and yet you’ve already gotten in all of your carbs and macro’s?!
As bad as it might sound, I choose my food based on the thought of what can I eat the largest quantity of to satisfy my appetite while staying healthy? Usually this is vegetables, lean proteins, water, etc…you know the usual.
Well, for meal #2 today (or lunch) I was craving some sweet potato after enjoying them at a restaurant a few nights before so I cooked up some chicken breast, some stir fry veggies and went to cook the sweet potato and decided to try something new then just the traditional baked sweet potato and voila I was able to come up with delicious sweet potato chips AND I got to eat a bunch of them without going overboard!
The traditional sweet potato chip recipe usually involves oil of some type or to toss the sweet potato in a butter of some sort to give it that buttery crisp taste. However, I usually do not combine my carbohydrates with fat and usually recommend this for anyone who is looking to lose weight or following a weight loss meal plan simply because your body processes carbs and fats the same. You do not need both at once so for this recipe we will just use some herbs and spices for all that delicious flavor!
Now, that does not mean that I don’t ever combine carbs and fats (ehh hemm bread and butter is my weakness!) it just means that usually 80% of the time I try to stick to this nutrition program which fits my fitness goals.
Now, on to the recipe! Here are the ingredients you will need to make this for one person (if it is for more than one just multiply ingredients by the number of people you are cooking for):
- 1 Sweet Potato (around 4oz.)
- Sea Salt
- Garlic Powder
- Non Stick Spray (I chose the butter flavor)
That is it! This recipe is so simple and it makes so many sweet potato chips that you will feel like you are eating a bag of potato chips, but it is just the size of one sweet potato sliced up and cooked a different way!
Directions: Pre-heat oven to 425 degrees and spray 2 baking sheets with non-stick cooking spray. My sweet potato slices took up 2 baking sheets and it was only 4oz so this will depend on how thick your slices come out. Wash the sweet potato then slice into very thin slices (the thinner it is the more crispy the chip will taste). Place the slices spread out on the baking sheets. Spritz the tops of the sliced sweet potatoes with the non-stick butter spray (this will help the seasoning stick). Sprinkle the tops of the slices with the Paprika, Sea Salt, and Garlic Powder based on how much flavor you would like. Bake at 425 for approximately 10-15 minutes depending on how crispy you would like these.
Remove from heat and enjoy as a healthy complex carb that tastes absolutely delicious!
It really is that simple and it’s an awesome way to enjoy your sweet potato without that feeling of consuming the entire thing in 3 seconds then feeling like you barely ate anything!
Sweet potatoes are an excellent post workout carbohydrate because it does have a slight amount of sugar in it, but also helps replenish the nutrients in your body. With my personal nutrition program, I typically consume the majority of my complex carbs in the first half of the day and swap them out for fats later in the day because I know this is the way my body functions best. When coming up with your own nutrition program make sure that you are eating intuitively which simply means listening to your bodies needs and noticing if you do best with your energy and workouts when you have more carbs in the morning OR when you swap carbs for fats in the morning. Every body is different and it is important to educate yourself on how fats, proteins, carbs, sugar, etc work in your own body so that you can learn how to structure a lifestyle around it instead of following the latest and greatest diet on the market.
This is exactly why I created the Flat ABS for Women program, not only to help women lose weight and tighten up their entire body, but also to educate women on how to understand your body so you know which workouts work best for you body shape, how to enjoy your favorite foods like chocolate, wine, etc as part of YOUR nutrition program by eating intuitively, but also (and most importantly) how to love your body and your life. We all are given one body so it is important to take the time to learn it, exercise it, feed it awesome and delicious food, and to love the heck out of it!
Start loving your body and learn the right workouts for you, along with how to eat intuitively by heading here!
